SOUTH KIWANIAN JOEL PARK IN THE CALIFORNIAN ON OCTOBER 19, 1999

Bakersfield is a great place to live, raise children and has the most outgoing, generous people I have seen in my many years of travel and living in different places.

Once in awhile our city has the opportunity to "show off" and we outstandingly did that this past month (August) when the California Nevada Hawaii District of Kiwanis held its annual convention here. Our hotels were bursting at the seams, our convention center was full and restaurants were jumping. But, alas, nowhere did I see anything in The Californian about this gala event.

We have 13 Kiwanis clubs in Division 33 area, 9 of which are right here in town. These prideful civic clubs do untold hours of community service and provide many dollars for needy folk.

Kiwanis International has undertaken the awesome task of ridding the world of Iodine Deficiency Syndrome and we are well on our way to accomplishing this feat!
